Zapatista is named in honor of the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata. Emiliano Zapata and his followers, the Zapatistas, fought ardently in the Mexican Revolution for land reform from 1910 until Zapata’s assassination in 1919. Through this time, and long after Zapata’s death, the Zapatistas represented the fight for freedom, fair wages, and above all the equal right to own land for all Mexicans. Given the importance of Mexican culture in the United States, we found it necessary to tell this story through our restaurant.
Zapatista is one of the Chicagoland area’s best Mexican restaurants. Favorite dishes include made-to-order guacamole and our unique fajitas which are served sizzling hot in lava stone molcajetes. Our menu also features a wide variety of meat and seafood dishes in both traditional and modern Mexican preparations, alongside a seemingly endless list of tequilas to be enjoyed by themselves or in one of our fresh squeezed margaritas.
Our bar area, clad in stone, offers a rustic, comfortable, and dramatic setting that sets itself apart from the trendy locale of the week. Guests of Zapatista may also enjoy al fresco dining in our grand outdoor patio from late spring to early autumn.
The first Zapatista opened in August of 2005 in the Near South Loop of Chicago and recently welcomed its sister store in September of 2009 in the suburb of Northbrook, IL. At Zapatista our delicious cuisine, warm atmosphere, and excellent service create a dining atmosphere that is perfect for all people and all occasions.
